EL SUEÑO aims to serve their community through deep-rooted connections and meaningful interactions designed to empower and uplift others through art. They regularly create accessible arts events throughout King County and use dance as a weapon against systems of oppression.
EL SUEÑO THE FLOWERS THAT BLOOM at THE HENRY ART GALLERY (2022)
EL SUEÑO: The Flowers That Bloom offered a snapshot of the company’s work, as well as an invitation to participate in its vision. At the center of the installation is the company’s logo, an image designed in collaboration with artist Nalisha Rangel that coalesces the tough chola figure with the nurturing Virgin Mary. Paper flowers that were hand-folded and installed by community partners and volunteers surround the image, transforming it into an ofrenda—an altar constructed to honor ancestors and lost loved ones; the mural thus invites reflection on what it means to be the recipient of an “American Dream” that has been generations in the making.
EL SUEÑO HEALING DAY at THE HENRY ART GALLERY (2022)
The EL SUEÑO Healing Day offered participants a chance to reflect on their own histories in the context of ancestral observance and hosted 3 free events that included guided meditation, movement, journaling, and discussion as a way to foster and understand one’s relationship and responsibility to their ancestral lineage. Featured artists included: Devin Muñoz (filmmaker), Alfonso Cervera (yoga practitioner), Maria Muñoz (Spiritual and Intuitive Guide), and Alicia Mullikin (EL SUEÑO Director).
EL SUEÑO DANCE DAY at SEATTLE CENTER (2022)
The EL SUEÑO Dance Day at Seattle Center was a free multi-cultural dance performance that featured 4 incredible local dance companies who boldly paved the way for BIPOC Dance communities throughout King County. Performances Included: Gansango Music and Dance (West African), Rangeela Dance Company (Indian Dance), Bailadores de Bronce (Mexican-Folklorico), Kontageous Performing Company (Hip Hop)
EL SUEÑO FLOWER WORKSHOP at THE HENRY ART GALLERY (2021)
The EL SUEÑO: Paper Flower Workshop offered an opportunity for community members to engage with EL SUEÑO and participate in the creation of a community ofrenda. The community ofrenda invited reflection on what it means to be the recipient of an “American Dream” while providing an invitation to participate in a collective vision for future generations.
EL SUEÑO DISCUSSION + CREATION at NOD THEATER (2021)
The EL SUEÑO: Discussion + Creation Workshop offered an opportunity for community members to engage with EL SUEÑO and discuss and create with the company. Participants were encouraged to write letters of reflection and love to their past and present ancestors as well as create paper flowers in honor of them. The hand-folded paper flowers were then used to design an exhibit at the Henry Art Gallery entitled EL SUEÑO: The Flowers That Bloom.
EL SUEÑO DANCE DAY at EL CENTRO DE LA RAZA (2021)
The EL SUEÑO Dance Day at El Centro de la Raza offered free access to a variety of dance classes, a dance performance, and Mexican sweets and treats. The participating artists included: Gansango Music and Dance (West African), Rangeela Dance Company (Indian Dance), Kontageous Performing Company (Hip Hop), Poc-Chuc Dance Collective (Contemporary), Kutt’n’Up Dance Crew (Hip Hop), and The Guild Dance Company (Contemporary).
